Jnana Mudra and Chin Mudra

jana mudra chin mudra

Description: Join the tip of the thumb with the tip of the index finger, and keep the remaining three fingers stretched out straight. Relax your hands and place them on your thighs. If the fingertips are facing toward the sky, it is called ‘Jnana Mudra’. Similarly, if the fingers are inclined toward the earth, it is known as ‘Chin Mudra’. In another method, the tip of the thumb can touch the first joint of the index finger. While the Jnana Mudra indicates a state of receiving energy, the Chin Mudra reflects the act of sharing or giving.

Effect and Symbolism: Since the tip of the thumb is the center for the pituitary and pineal glands, applying pressure on that spot allows them to function actively. This is helpful for physical and mental balance. The three straight fingers represent the three qualities of nature: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. The circle formed by the thumb and index finger is a symbol of the divine presence where the individual soul (Jivatma) merges with the Supreme Soul (Paramatma).

Benefits: Continuous practice of this mudra increases concentration and memory power. It is a panacea for problems like excessive sleep, insomnia, and blood pressure. It relieves mental agitation and makes the mind calm. Practicing this mudra along with the chanting of the Gayatri Mantra awakens divine consciousness and fosters a sense of selflessness. Additionally, it helps in controlling bad habits.
