While Daksha Prajapati actually married thirteen of his daughters to Sage Kashyapa, the two who share the most famous, interconnected rivalry in the epics are Kadru and Vinata.

When Sage Kashyapa, pleased with his wives, offered them boons, Kadru asked to be the mother of one thousand powerful serpent sons. Vinata, wanting to outdo her, asked for just two sons who would be far superior in strength and stature to all of Kadru's children. From Kadru's eggs hatched the entire race of Nagas (including Vasuki and Takshaka), while Vinata's eggs gave birth to Aruna (the charioteer of the sun god) and Garuda (the celestial king of birds). Their competitive relationship and a fateful wager over the color of the divine horse Uchchaihshravas set off the eternal enmity between eagles and snakes.

he celestial cow possessed by Sage Jamadagni was Kamadhenu (sometimes referred to as her daughter/equivalent, Sabala). She had the miraculous power to instantly provide anything her owner desired, allowing the sage to easily feed entire royal armies at his humble hermitage.

When the greedy Haihaya King, Kartavirya Arjuna, witnessed this miracle during a visit, he demanded the cow for himself. After Jamadagni politely refused to give her away, the king's men attempted to take her by force, sparking the violent conflict that eventually led to the death of Jamadagni and Parashurama's subsequent vow of vengeance.

(Note for your trivia players: Surabhi is often considered the mother of all cows from whom Kamadhenu emerged, and Nandini is her daughter who belonged to Sage Vashistha).

Karna fought in the Kurukshetra war for a total of 7 days (from Day 11 to Day 15 under Dronacharya's command, and Day 16 and 17 as the supreme commander himself).

Even though the war lasted 18 days, Karna did not fight for the first 10 days. This was due to a bitter dispute with the first Kaurava commander, Bhishma, who insulted Karna's lineage and fighting status by classifying him as only a Ardha Ratha (half-charioteer). Karna refused to fight while Bhishma was leading the Kaurava forces, as Bhishma had insulted his skills and belittled his status as a "Suta" (charioteer's son). Insulted, Karna vowed never to step onto the battlefield as long as Bhishma was alive. He only entered the war on Day 11 after Bhishma fell on the bed of arrows. Karna was ultimately killed by Arjuna on the 17th day of the war while trying to lift his stuck chariot wheel.

When King Kartavirya Arjuna forcefully stole the wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu from Sage Jamadagni’s hermitage, Parashurama (the sage's youngest son and an avatar of Lord Vishnu) was away.

Upon returning and learning of the theft and insult to his father, an enraged Parashurama pursued the king to his capital city of Mahishmati. A fierce battle took place where Parashurama single-handedly destroyed the king's massive army. When King Kartavirya confronted him using his celestial boon of a thousand arms, Parashurama systematically severed all of the king's arms using his legendary battleaxe (parashu) and slew him, successfully rescuing Kamadhenu and bringing her back to his father's ashram.

On the 13th day of the Kurukshetra war, Dronacharya (serving as the supreme commander of the Kaurava army) formed the Chakravyuha—a deadly, multi-layered rotating spiral battle formation. It was strategically deployed to capture Yudhisthira while Arjuna was lured away to another part of the battlefield. Arjuna's young son, Abhimanyu, was the only one present who knew how to enter the maze, but he did not know how to exit it, leading to his heroic yet tragic death.

The ruler of the Haihaya kingdom, King Kartavirya Arjuna (also known as Sahasrabahu Arjuna because he was blessed with a thousand arms), visited Sage Jamadagni's ashram with his massive army. Using the powers of the wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu, the sage was able to instantly serve a royal feast to the entire army.

Blown away by this miracle, the king demanded the cow. When Jamadagni refused, the king's soldiers forcefully seized Kamadhenu and her calf, destroying the ashram in the process. When Parashurama returned and learned of the insult, he hunted down the king, cut off his thousand arms, and killed him, sparking the legendary feud between Parashurama and the corrupt warrior clan.

To save his ancestors from falling into hell, the intense sage Jaratkaru vowed he would only marry a woman who shared his exact name. Knowing this, the Serpent King Vasuki offered his own sister, whose birth name was also Jaratkaru (later widely known as Goddess Manasa). From this unique union of Jaratkaru and Jaratkaru, the great young sage Astika was born, who eventually stopped the catastrophic snake sacrifice of King Janamejaya.

King Janamejaya (the great-grandson of Arjuna) organized the devastating Sarpa Satra yagna to avenge the death of his father, King Parikshit, who had been fatally bitten by the serpent king Takshaka. The ritual was so powerful that snakes from all over the world were mechanically drawn by the mantras and consumed by the sacrificial fire.

To save his clan, Takshaka sought refuge with Indra. However, the priests simply intensified the chants to drag both Indra and Takshaka into the fire together. At this critical moment, a brilliant young boy named Astika—the son of Sage Jaratkaru and the snake goddess Manasa (Vasuki's sister)—arrived at the court. Using his immense wisdom, eloquence, and knowledge of the scriptures, he deeply impressed King Janamejaya. Granted a boon by the pleased king, Astika requested that the sacrifice be terminated immediately, saving Takshaka and the remaining serpent race.
